Stewart's Organic Farm is a 100 acre farm situated in a beautiful setting at the mouth of the Gaspereau Valley, along the edge of the Gaspereau River. We are currently growing a wide variety of apples, berries and vegetables and we make our own apple cider and fresh-squeezed juices.

Our Committments

Quality

Our number one goal is to provide you with the highest quality food possible. We ensure quality through freshness, great care, and leave the rest to nature! Quality produce, which begins with healthy soil, is a combination of the flavour, nutritional value, and aesthetic quality of everything we grow. Growing quality produce in this way honours our land, our customers and ourselves as farmers.

Local

As a part of a flourishing local food movement we contribute to our local economy by: relying on hand-labour for planting, weeding and harvesting; working with local processing facilities; and, aiming to make our produce easily accessible to our community. We also celebrate the health, community, and environmental benefits of eating local!

Organic

Adopting organic agricultural principles was initially done with an eye to the future, recognizing the importance of untangling the cost of food production and the cost of petroleum. We see organic farming as a movement towards health on all levels—benefiting the environment, community, and individuals.

Our Vegetables

There are a number of considerations that go into choosing our vegetable seed. Genetic modification, open-pollinated and hybrid varieties, organic and non-organic seed, productivity and biodiversity, flavour and nutritional value, and local and distant seed houses are some of the many considerations in choosing what vegetables we grow and what seed we buy.

Alan Stewart

My family has been farming in the Hortonville and Grand Pre area, and selling to its community, for more than 100 years. Twenty years ago, I converted the farm to certified organic production to ensure a long-term future for this small and diverse farm. My wife Janice and I also became involved in the production of children, having three within the first four years of the 1990's.

I have been a key participant in building the Wolfville Farmers' Market. As one of the first vendors, I have invested much time and energy into developing a market with the aim of delivering quality, locally produced food directly from farmers to our community.

Sarah & Joey Pittoello

2012 is going to be our fourth season here in the beautiful Annapolis Valley. Mia, our young daughter, joined us in our farming adventures in December, so 2012 is projected to be an interesting year!

We have been involved with farming, food, and education for the past seven years. Joey spends his off-farm time as the Director of Coffee at Just Us! Coffee Roasters' and Sarah is a counsellor and yoga teacher. We both love to cook and food has always played a central role in both of our lives.
